Preliminary Tasks

Today I completed a task on researching publication companies. I had to research a specific company for the task and other companies that would work for my project. This task was very insightful exploring what companies focus on what genres and what companies focus on what I want to do for my project.

Today I completed a task on analyzing media texts. We were instructed to find a clip of a TV show and analyze it and break it down scene by scene. I found this task to be extremely helpful practice. It helped showed me how much detail has to be present.

I have decided to go with print for my final project. I chose to do print because while taking a photography class I grew really accustomed to using a camera and being able to use it confidently. I've never attempted to do anything print related before, so I am up for the challenge. In my all about me video I mentioned having prior rookie experience with movie making and the idea of doing something fresh and new is what drew me to this selection. For my genre, I've decided to go with hobby. I enjoy collecting things and have a lot of things that will make interesting photos.

Today's task was to work in a group and dissect stereotypes in media texts. The purpose was to analyze how stereotypes are used in media texts and how they affect the audience's thinking. This helped me understand how important it is to do things intentionally because they stick with the audience and can change their perception of things

Today's preliminary task was to create an All About Me video. I learned a lot about making videos throughout this process. I learned filming is not as easy as it seems. I had trouble remembering off the top of my head what I needed to say without looking at my script. So extensive practice was necessary for me to remember my whole script.

Today I completed the next task of making a story board. This assignment was to create a story board based on a prompt. This assignment helped me realize how much planning goes on for each scene. It helped me realize how detailed each slide needed to be to bring your vision to life.

Today I completed another task focused on editing. The assignment was analyzing the use of cuts within a scene, seeing how many were used to transition the one scene to the next. This assignment helped put into perspective how many cuts are used in even the shortest scenes of characters having a conversation. It helped me understand the use of quicker cuts versus the use of slow and long cuts between scenes, and how both can be beneficial.

Today I completed a task focusing on the use of mise en scène. The assignment was to find a movie/tv show and an advertisement that uses mise en scène to provide information. I found it extremely helpful studying how the visual provides more information than what is physically spoken in a scene or advertisement.

Today I completed a task on the technical element of sound. The assignment was to find clips of all the sound types and analyze its role in the production of the meaning. This helped me recognize different types of sounds and how they are used in media texts.

Today I completed a task on composition. The assignment was to analyze camera shots and angles and technical decisions that were made to see how they emphasized meaning in a media text. It helped me analyze how a scene was composed and what message it was trying to portray.

Today I completed a task focused on Camera Shots and angles. The assignment had me find 2 different scene that showed two different camera shots and then two different scenes that showed two different types of angles. This assignment helped me better my understanding of angles and shots and how they can be used to tell a story.
